P. gayi is an easy to grow aquarium plant, because it makes few demands on the hobbyist. This species is not too fussy about fertilization, and a medium light depth is enough for its good growth. CO2 injection isn't required, although it is beneficial. P. gayi is tolerant to a wide range of pH values and will grow great in medium-hard water. This species has a long adjustment duration while planted, and care need to be exercised in placement as to prevent the need for replanting. The slim, 5-9mm wide leaves varies from an olive green to a reddish brown and grows to be 5-10cm long.
